Production Focus: Lazarus

Space Studios Manchester hosted Harlan Coben’s mind-bending thriller Lazarus for 33 weeks, from December 2023 to June 2024.

Starring Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy and Alexandra Roach, the six-part Prime Video series follows forensic psychiatrist Dr Joel ‘Laz’ Lazarus (Claflin), who returns home following the death of his father (Nighy). As unexplained experiences begin to unfold, Laz finds himself drawn into a series of cold-case murders while confronting the mysteries surrounding his father’s death and the murder of his sister 25 years earlier.

Based on an original story by New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben and BAFTA-winner Danny Brocklehurst, the series was produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Manchester-based Quay Street Productions and Final Twist Productions. Executive producers include Harlan Coben, Danny Brocklehurst, Nicola Shindler, Richard Fee and Sam Claflin, with Wayne Che Yip, Nicole Volavka and Daniel O’Hara directing.

Production was based at Space Studios Manchester, using our stages, production offices and workshops. Large-scale sets were built on site for key locations including the laboratory, library and main office, with ambitious double-storey builds demonstrating the scale and flexibility available to productions at Space.

Beyond the studio, Manchester became an integral part of the world of Lazarus. Screen Manchester worked closely with the locations team throughout the shoot, facilitating filming permits across the city. Locations included the Langley Building in the Northern Quarter, George Leigh Street in Ancoats, BIMM on Faulkner Street, Chinatown, Southern Cemetery, Hotel Gotham, Mayfield Park, the Rochdale Canal and Northern Quarter music venue The Peer Hat.

Harlan Coben’s Lazarus launched on Prime Video on 22 October 2025.
